BRUNELLESCHI: GENIUS OR CRAZY ARCHITECT?

THE SECRETS OF THE DOME! – KIDS WORKSHOP

Filippo Brunelleschi is an architect, painter and sculptor. He was a son of a famous notary, he studied scientific subjects because he had to follow his father’s footsteps. In 1401 Brunelleschi participated in the competition for the second doors of the Baptistery. We know that he didn’t win the prestigious competition, in reality he got equal with Ghiberti. The guild of Calimala chose Ghiberti because he used a more traditional language in his decoration. From the biography written by Antonio di Tuccio Manetti, a pupil of Brunelleschi, we know about his bad temper and how he was strongly proud. After the disappointment for the defeat, Brunelleschi went to Rome with his friend Donatello, where he was struck by antiquity. When he come back to Florence Brunelleschi totally changed his design, in fact, his architecture had a strong inspiration from the ancient monuments. New constructive ideas illuminated the architect and his patron Cosimo the Elder, so that solve together the ancient problem that plagued Florence: the lack of the Dome!
