PLAY WITH THE SAINTS IN ORSANMICHELE CHURCH!
Kids Workshop
Orsanmichele is a Lombard Church, it was founded in the middle of eighth century as a small Oratory dedicate to St. Michael the Archangel. Later it became a Benedictine Monastery, it was demolished around 1240 to build an open covered porch for grain. On a pillar of the open Loggia was painted a picture of the Virgin Mary and Child that made miracles to Florentine people, in fact, Her eyes had been seen moving, so She gave graces to the citizens. By that moment it was called “Madonna delle Grazie”. Large donations by the Republic of Florence were given to Orsanmichele Church, so it was enriched with statues. Orsanmichele Church become the seat of important guilds of the city: the Florentine Arts and Crafts, that preserved the workers doing the same job. At the end of the fourteenth century the arches of the open loggia were walled and was built a second floor used as a grain storehouse. Only at the beginning of the fifteenth century the building was consecrated as Orsanmichele Church. Then it became the religious site for all the Florentine guilds, who had the patronage of each niche of the façade, commissioning the most important artists. Today all the statues of the façade are replica, the original ones are on the second floor of the Orsanmichele museum except St. George by Donatello, which is preserved at National Museum of Bargello or St. Louis of Toulouse located at the Opera di Santa Croce Museum.
